Recap

In a post-apocalyptic world, we are presented with Izzy (a no-nonsense, pessimistic, goth girl who ain't scared of nuttin).  The world appears to be endings. There are strippers who can rip their skin off and replenish their skin (works better than Botox). Their a vulture that circles the dying (also head is in a cage, body of a human). We also get EarthEater (The bad guys).  EarthEater is assigned to kill Izzy. Vulture warns Izzy of the contract. Izzy sets off to settle old scores before EarthEater kills her.

Review

Dan Watters did a really good job of bringing all the major players upfront. However, it felt a little fast. I would have liked to have known a little bit more about certain characters before moving on with the story. This is, however, the first issue. We may find out more as the series goes on. With that being said, I didn’t connect to any of the characters because it felt a bit vague.  Although I just complained about character development, one of the things I did enjoy was that everyone was introduced, and I know who is who. I know it sounds like an oxymoron but let me explain. I liked that I know who the main characters are, and who is on who’s side. I enjoyed that aspect. The question lies do I know enough about the characters to “care” to pick up the next issue to see what happens next (I will get to that). The writing and storytelling were both consistent.  The story flowed well. It was action, drama and a lot of what the heck is going on moments. All which was enjoyable.  I also liked the fact you had no idea what was going on, nor did you know what was coming up next.

I did enjoy the artwork. The setting looked like New Mexico or Arizona. Almost like the old west. A shout out to Brad Simpson the colorist. I loved his use of pink and yellows throughout the book. It fit perfectly with the vibe of the story. Dani did really well with the consistency of the artwork panel to panel.

Final Thoughts

Character development is important to a new book. You must click with a character in order to pick up the next issue. Doesn’t mean you have to like them; you can hate them but still may be interested in what happens to that character. Was it enough to pull me in? Yes and No. I like the story, I like the direction it’s going, the artwork is fun. Yes, I am interested and will pick up issue two.
