Ant-Man & the Wasp # 2

Cover Artist: David Nakayama
Publisher: Marvel Comics

What You Need To Know:

After last issue, Scott and Nadia are stuck in the Microverse. They work together to save the citizens of the Microverse from a “space vampire”. Unfortunately, the creature did something to Nadia and her eyes became a glowing read energy.

What You Will Find Out:

Issue 2 starts with strange alien creatures debating about what to do about an invasion. The invasion turns out to be a giant foot. This foot belongs to none other than Nadia Van Dyne, the Wasp. The scene shifts to an hour earlier. Nadia has become completely blind after her eyes were changed. Ant-Man shrinks and goes inside her eyes to check it out. He’s an engineer so he thinks he can fix the problem.

While Scott is working on Nadia’s eyes, he starts chatting with her to distract her. He asks her to tell him about herself. Nadia tells him of her origin in the Red Room and how she escaped to America and became the All-New Wasp, by using one of Janet Van Dyne’s old outfits and some Pym Particles.  Scott mentions that she doesn’t talk like a normal teen and she says that she learned English from Downton Abbey. She tells him about being an Avenger and creating her all-female science division.

Scott tells Nadia about how he became Ant-Man. He had stolen Pym’s suit to save his daughter. Pym gave Scott his blessing afterward. Ant-Man points out that they have similar origins in that they both “borrowed” an identity. The Wasp starts to argue the point, but loses her footing and falls. She lands on solid ground. Unfortunately, this was on a smaller plane of the Microverse where Nadia was essentially a giant and was inadvertently terrorizing the creatures that lived there.

One of the creatures came up with a device to capture the giant girl. He uses a shrink cannon on Nadia. Unfortunately, Scott is still inside her eyes. So he has to shrink while she shrinks or he will kill her. Also, he reveals he is about to run out of Pym Particles. The Wasp tells him to get to her tear ducts to escape. Nadia recalls the pain of never getting to meet her father and starts to cry. This allows Scott to ride the tears out of Nadia before it is too late.

The creatures lock Nadia up in a containment unit, but they have taken her uniform. She can’t understand them because she doesn’t have the translator in her helmet. Nadia also doesn’t know if Ant-Man got out safely. The alien says he will be back tomorrow to study her and promises to keep the incisions to a minimum. Nadia starts calling for Mr. Lang, as she calls Ant-Man. It is revealed that Scott is in the compartment where they placed Nadia’s costume, where he is still very small, and out of Pym Particles.

What Just Happened:

This issue was mostly to catch up with the readers on the origins of Ant-Man and the Wasp. These two barely know each other, so it was a great way for the characters and any new readers to get familiar. The designs of the aliens were interesting. I love how abstract the Microverse can be. The art is very well done in this series and the color really pops.

Rating: 9/10

Final Thoughts: I am very much enjoying this series The writing and art are both on point and I can’t wait to see how Ant-Man and the Wasp get out of this mess.
