What You Need to Know:  Batman and Catwoman are getting married. This has been building for some months starting when Batman proposed back in issue 25. Throughout their journey, they have faced Demons, Titans, and Super Villians all in the pursuit of happiness, not to mention the occasional possession by Plant Spores of the entire planet. This is a big deal for Batman and his counterpart and in so many ways his equal Catwoman.

A large part of this “Extra Sized Anniversary Issue” is every other page has a short clip of the story of how Batman and Catwoman came to meet, with a new artist team on each.

What You’ll Find Out: The time has come and Batman makes the preparations. First, a Judge to preside over the ceremony.

Then Selina is off to secure the Maid of Honor. Holly Robinson is incarcerated in Arkham Asylum, but Selina makes some connections with the right guards and springs Holly for the Wedding. (As you recall Holly is in jail for the Murders of the Terrorists that kidnapped her, and Selina had previously taken the blame. She was being housed by Thalia Al Ghul in secret, and Batman and Catwoman traveled to get her to set Selina’s name right see issue 35).

With the preparations underway they decide to meet on the rooftop where they met. Batman is off to take down Tweedle Dum while Cat takes down Tweedle Dee. Nothing too hard tonight, having just recently faced down the Joker, Riddler, Ivy, and Thalia they are due for some light weights like Kite Man and the Tweedles.

Selina takes Holly and introduces her to Stately Wayne Manor. She is impressed of course, but Selina also let her in the secret back entrance with a blindfold on (cannot be too careful, and you know Batman will be mad).

Several Famous Artists guest star in this issue.

Holly helps Selina and Alfred helps Bruce prepare. A touching scene where Bruce asks Alfred to be his witness.

What just Happened:

Batman and Catwoman make it to their respective towers. Bruce, Alfred, and the Judge are at one, and Holly and Selina at another, but no one seems to be together. Each is in a different location, and each takes their leap of Faith.

Each took their leap, and the corresponding artwork seems to lead us to believe that they did get married, but as we hear Holly describe as she heads back to her cell in Arkham they left alone, and she was devastated. This looks to be a master plan of a Cadre of Criminal Masterminds to “Break the Batman”.

Rating: 7/10

Final Thought: To be completely candid I had a hard time understanding the ending on this one. It was a small plot that built up to a climax that did not truly deliver. As for the artwork in the issue itself, I get the chance to cram as many artists in a milestone issue as possible; however, I do not think that you can count this since nothing eventually happened. I was actually disappointed with the lack of exposition, and can only say a bit bewildered by the ending. I will, of course, have to tune in next issue to see what happened, especially since I saw Psycho Pirate and Possibly an Evil Skeets along with the Thomas Wayne Batman on the last panel, but this issue is all filler. 7 out of 10 because we get all these covers and artists doing their spots in the issue, but the story was weak. As far as an event book, I would say it’s a must for any Batman fan, but falls flat as a regular continuity book.
