What You Need to Know:
Wilson Fisk is the Mayor of New York, and he has just eliminated both his major competition in one fell swoop. First the Crime bosses, and second the Street Vigilantes, except for Daredevil. Both have been incarcerated, and Fisk confronts Daredevil, beating him badly with a Sledgehammer.

He leaves the confrontation with Daredevil, to be assaulted during a speech on stage in Central Park. The Hand ninjas, shoot him full of arrows. The police try to contain the mayhem and take Daredevil into custody. Over the radio, Daredevil hears the news about Fisk, and that Matt Murdock is the new Mayor of New York.

Matt hears the news as he is shackled into a Police van. He uses his enhanced senses to test the shackles for weaknesses and make his escape. Unfortunately, these were made for those who have powers, and he has no luck.

His break comes when two figures appear outside the van. He thinks these are the two officers that arrested him, but they are in fact Hand Ninjas that try to kill him!

Daredevil uses the confusion of their attack to break free and to escape his capture. Matt kills the Undead Ninja’s and makes his escape.

What You’ll Find Out:
Back at City hall, Wesley and the Police Chief speak with Steven Cornish about the chain of command. The previous administration had silently changed the bylaws to allow the Deputy Mayor to be next in command. Wilson Fisk essentially just replaced himself with his worst enemy. Amidst the Arguments, Matt commends Steven on his bravery to stand up and do what’s right. Wesley ( The Kingpin’s personal assistant, and Chief of Staff) protests, to which Matt promptly relieves him of duty.

With Matt in charge, he tells the Police Chief that the Police officers are not to engage the Hand, as they are dangerous killers. He has Other plans on how to take them down.

The Heroes are released from Custody, and they know what to do.

What Just Happened?
Just before his return to New York, Matt went to China to rescue his friend Sam (Blindside). He had fallen in with the leader of the Hand, the Demon “The Beast”. The Beast was supposedly vanquished by Sam and Matt before their return, yet he was responsible for the return of Sam’s eyes.

In the final few panels of the book, we see the Beast has in fact survived. He cracks a wry smile as his underlings tell him the name of the new Mayor. They whisper the name of his enemy Matt Murdock.

Next time, the return of the Beast!

Final Thought:
With Daredevil stories, you have these low points where you think that it just cannot possibly get any worse for Matt. With Daredevil having his issues and Matt simultaneously, it makes for a compelling story between the two. Here is the turning point. A man without friends, at the end of his rope, and the events that were set in motion to destroy him, turn out to become his greatest weapon in the battle to save his city. Charles Soule has done a marvelous job in capturing Daredevil and Matt Murdock. I cannot wait to see what this upshift in his luck will bring next.
