What You Need to Know:
The Red Lanterns a no longer willing to sit idly by and with the newly recruited Hal Jordan & Starro the Conqueror make way for Oa. In hopes of stopping this and saving the universe, the New God Metron has hired Lobo with the task of bringing and protecting Blue Beetle. At the same time, the Titans make for space to save their missing friend.
What You’ll Find Out:
The Titans continue their journey through space on the Javelin to locate their missing friend. The onboard alarm continuing to blare without any signs of stopping. As they begin to approach Blue Beetles destination a proximity alarm triggers alongside the previous alarm. But they are unable to react as Lobo crashes his motorcycle into the front of the Javelin forcing them to stop. Superboy goes out to meet the Bounty Hunter. Lobo, having a history with Superman, references that he’s had trouble facing someone with that same logo in the past and is prepared this time. Loading his pistol with a kryptonite bullet and firing at Superboy. Luckily for him, Wonder Girl deflects the bullet and saves his life. Metron intervenes to de-escalate the situation. After Skeets explains who the New God is, Starfire asks him a simple question. How to turn off the alarm on the Javelin.
The Titans reunite and learn about Starro the Conqueror and the war between the Red & Green Lanterns. That if Blue Beetle doesn’t conquer the conqueror that the universe will be lost. Wonder Girl asks if Metron will help in the battle but he won’t directly interfere. However, using the Mobius Chair he can transport them to the battlezone instantly.
Unfortunately, the battle on Oa is not going well for the Green Lanterns. A number of their Lanterns have already been claimed by Starro including the Guardian Sayd. With the battle spiraling out of their favor, Hal pleads to Soranik for a Ring but she continues to refuse him. Choosing to drop him on Oa and presumably return to the battlefield after. Metron, the Titans, and Lobo arrive on the battlefield but Blue Beetle is nowhere to be found. Skeets leads Booster Gold to him where he sits hiding in a room. He doesn’t believe he can save the universe and begins to say what Batman thinks of him but is cut off. Booster Gold clearly doesn’t think highly of Batman and tears into him. Saying that his superpower is giving other people crippling insecurities. Assuring Blue Beetle that they’ll win and that if they don’t then Ted Kord died for nothing.
This confuses Blue Beetle prompting Booster Gold to explain. He had come back in the past to try and save Ted Kord but someone wouldn’t allow him to. That Ted Kord needed to die so that Blue Beetle could take his place. He continues to his pep talk and saying it’s not his fault, it’s just how the universe worked. That it needed to happen so he’d be in place to save it and that he wouldn’t be alone to do it. Skeets replays a part of Ted Kords dying message where he put his faith in Blue Beetle which is enough to get him ready to fight. The issue ending as the pair join the battle.
What Just Happened?
The three plot threads have finally connected and another war is breaking out. The Titans, Lobo, and Metron have arrived to help turn the tide against Starro the Conqueror and the Red Lanterns. Largely, it was an okay chapter but made up for it in the last third with the Booster Gold & Blue Beetle scene. It was nice seeing how Booster grew and has moments showing how good a character he is. At the same time showing how inexperienced and insecure Blue Beetle is.
Rating: 6/10
Final Thought: They keep teasing Superboy dying since his return and even the title for next issue Casualties of War is foreboding. But I’m getting the sense that’s just a red herring and Booster is gonna suddenly take the fall.
