What You Need to Know:

Trapped by the Umbra Sprite ( who goes by the Umbra Mother these days) Magda and Hugo work on their escape plans. Magda tries to call for help to no avail, while Hugo looks for some inspiration in the Abyss that is outside their cell’s door. What Hugo tells his Mother gives Magda a whole new inspiration for a way out.

Kevin and Miranda have stopped at the Beach to get an artifact that Kevin’s friend and collector of magical items deemed too dangerous to find. Kevin wants to allow Miranda some better protection since she has to tag along on his journey.

What You’ll Find Out:
The two travel into a cavern at the Beach edge, but Kevin is getting some help from his young daughter. Miranda is able to see the Patterns or can read magic on the walls. Kevin uses a piece of Driftwood to summon Excalibur and light their way into the grotto. Deeper and deeper they go in search of the magical item that Joe Phat told them was there.

What Just Happened?

Kevin dives into the freezing waters in search of the treasure. He does find the Chest quite untouched, but it was not unguarded. A large Demon Fish attacks Kevin as he makes for the Treasure Chest.

Kevin takes a nearby Starfish, and empowers it with the Power of Excalibur, and hurls it at the Monster. The strain is too much, and with the power of Excalibur in it, the Starfish causes the Monster to explode.

The Sprites scheme while their Mother recuperates from casting her latest spell. Her most loyal Daughters Olga and Karol disagree about the strength of their plans and their Mother. Eventually, after arguing a bit, the Umbra Sprite calls in her most loyal daughters in to reveal her plans on defeating the Pendragon. They plan to fight Kevin when he comes to save Magda and Hugo. The plan has been set, but the Sprite looks like she has seen better days. She is exhausted and haggard.

Kevin Beats the Demon fish and obtains a magical Peacock Feather cape. This mystic item will allow Miranda to hide in plain sight, or be anything that she wants to appear like. Miranda catches on right away. Luckily her mother took the time to foster her magical abilities. Now with a means of protection, Kevin becomes closer to liking the idea of Miranda tagging along on his rescue mission.

Back in the Tower, Hugo and Magda try to make contact with a demon from outside their cell door. They try to ask for a servant and are met with a quick response from one of the Fairies. One answers, and pledges it’s service to Magda. With this, she is able to control its form, and she quickly makes a Cat with Wings!

Final Thought: An interesting story, but it felt a little too short in general. This is a Hero Saga, and we haven’t gotten to the Hero piece in general. The book reads a bit slow, possibly due to the slow build up of consequences ( of which now seem very loose in the hands of the Mother. As much as, I was a bit bewildered, there is a lot of groundwork laid down for an epic showdown for Good vs Evil!
