Basil Miranda, once destined to be a fleet officer, finds herself protesting the very organization she dedicated her life to join. Her friends have a plan to expose the fleet’s dark secrets, but the only way they can do it is with Basil’s help. Is this act of rebellion going too far even for our newly radicalized Basil? And could Charlotte ever forgive Basil if she goes through with it?
Review
Woah, Visaggio really pulled off a statement in this issue. One about how we internalize hatred and societal norms, and how that hasn’t stopped reaching LGBT+ people of all ages in this story, no matter the apparent progress on this futurist progressive Star Trek-like society. I feel like this comic went all the way through with the fact that being in a relationship with someone of your same gender is still severely punished in high class aspiring careers and “progressive” environments, and a thing to hide/never tell. And, well, since the advances are also met with backlash every time, and we’re not gonna be sure the future is really gonna be that brighter… let’s tell it like it is.
The art pulled all in, with the protest dynamics and protesters’ struggle opposed to Basil’s own internal struggle. You can feel the whole bloody fight for their lives and survivorship under this seemingly perfect institution taking central point. The coloring is just beautiful and the well-defined precious line work and backgrounds contrast good enough with how this issue is rough, difficult, emotionally charged.
It’s the art which also has been telling you in this whole something is wrong with this future utopia, and, in this issue, it just explodes.
Final Thoughts
For a story so heavily centered in future utopias, with space soap opera design, it's a bold move to put such a harsh criticism on the colonialist and homophobic roots of a society based solely on science and progress. While at the same time showing that same struggle in a personal way and how we internalize these ideas. Most I got from this is just brilliant ideas, with a very fitting context.
