What You Need to Know:

The Super Sons return in a flashback story that dives deep into the bombastic bromance between Superboy and Robin. It’s not all fun and games for the epic duo though, as they soon find themselves as targets of an interstellar team of young badasses called the Gang!

What You’ll Find Out:

The boys must take out The Puppeteer’s remote-controlled statue of Superman destroying a park in Metropolis, but in stopping one threat, they exposed themselves to another. On the dark side of the moon, an ominous unknown individual identifies the superhero duo and vows to soon bring their demise. After their fight against The Puppeteer the two return to school where they are soon released for summer. A summer of super!

Superboy and Robin are taken to their headquarters under Morrison Bay to make necessary repairs, but they are soon alerted to some kind of monster loose in the Mall of Metropolis. After a brief fight against the hairy monster, Robin is hurt from a gunshot and almost apprehended. As he lays on the ground, an interstellar group called the Gang reveals themselves and the gold Kryptonite that brings Superboy to his knees.

With Robin and Superboy rendered nearly helpless, the Gang consisting of Shaggy Boy, Ice Princess, Kid Deadshot, Brainiac 6, Joker Jr., and Rex Luthor promises their end will only hurt for a second!

What Just Happened:

The Super Sons return following their previous Rebirth series from returning writer Peter J. Tomasi. His connection with Robin and Superboy is just as apparent in this issue as it ever was, as he tells a story of unique dangers mixed with the fun banter that makes the two such a great duo. Their contrasting personalities always make for a joyful reading experience, but with the introduction of what is essentially a children’s Legion of Doom in “the Gang”, readers can expect a light-hearted and action-packed narrative with a lot of great references.

The creative team makes an explosive entrance with the first few pages in issue #1 of the new flashback miniseries. The confrontation with The Puppeteer’s remote Superman is a classic fight where Robin’s intellect and attitude along with Superboy’s strength and politeness contribute to creating a thrilling battle. The humor is perfectly balanced with development and action, but more importantly, it didn’t feel forced at all. As the superhero duo gets back in the swing of things, Robin’s determination mixed with Superboy’s constant positivity proves to be a genuinely laughable situation.

While first issues in miniseries can often start slow because of introductions or world-building, the first issue of Adventures of the Super Sons wastes no time in picking right up on the action. The Gang quickly proves to be just what the duo set out to stop, and with characters like Joker Jr. and Rex Luthor, the group will certainly be up to some crazy stuff! Fans of the duo will not only find a few laughs in their first issue back together but also fast-paced action and new characters that tease a story unlike anything seen before.

Who is the mysterious villain promising the death of the Super Sons? What does the Gang have planned for Robin and Superboy? We will find out in the next issue of Adventures of the Super Sons!

Rating: 9/10

Final Thoughts:  The Super Sons are back! The first issue in their new miniseries proves to be a light-hearted and action-packed narrative featuring the same great chemistry that made the superhero duo so great in their Rebirth series. It’s a fun start that promises exhilarating moments ahead, especially as Robin and Superboy face off against the group of interstellar villain-children known as the Gang!
