Recap

Commander Rao is hell-bent on revenge. Revenge she wants at any cost, but when violence begets violence. Will her appetite be quenched?

Review

Commander Rao is a non-stop action sci-fi comic that leaves you wanting more! From the first panel to the last, it takes hold and does not let go until the ride is over. And what a ride it is.

The book opens up with a newspaper clipping celebrating Rao’s accomplishments, but that’s where the celebration ends, and the battle begins. The creative team of Fellhound (story/art/design) and Lettersquids (letters/logo) have combined forces to bring us a dystopian story of pain, revenge, and war that would make Ridley Scott proud. Commander Rao excels at every turn. The art has some really cool moments, the layout is gorgeous, letters do a great job at jumping off the panels, and then there’s the story!

Fellhound has penned a tale that is more than just a run-of-the-mill sci-fi story. As the action plays, you start to realize that there’s more to Kasey than what Fellhound is giving us. I adore the vagueness of not having a full background story, but at the same time, I wish this was a mini-series because I NEED to know more. Kasey’s story is more than just revenge. There are hints of pain, love, PTSD, and, more importantly, questions of the human spirit on what will truly make the pain better. This is such a well-put-together book that I sincerely hope we see more of Kasey and what is in her future. Fellhound and Lettersquids need to be on your list of people to watch out for.

Final Thoughts

Big action! The fighting spirit of Captain America. The hopeful and just soul of Superman. The love and understanding of Wonder Woman. Commander Rao may not be a straight-up superhero, but she’s definitely a character that folks can buy into and stand by. I hope we see more of her.
