Review

This comic had me asking questions right out of the gate. I’m no stranger to Marvel comics having their characters cross dimensions and realities like their crossing the road, but I definitely had to check my morning coffee for tampering when I saw what enchanted city Conan had found his way into today. The cities and landscapes of Hyboria have nothing on the glitz and glam of Las Vegas.

Seeing Conan wonder up out of the desert and onto the street of Vegas was a little shocking.

Conan, in true barbarian form however, does not let being a wanderer in a strange land stop him from falling back on his old ways. I will warn readers of similar Conan adventures though, this one took me a minute to get fully into. It was a little jarring at first to see out hack and slash hero out of his world and drinking a beer or interacting with elements of our own world but once I got into the story I was hooked.

This new series brings a lot to the ongoing Conan story and the artwork is definitely in line with the Conan style, despite being possessed of modern benchmarks. Vibrant landscapes and interesting characters set a story that I cant wait to see unfold to its fullest over the next five issues. Saladin Ahmed is a writer who is very comfortable in the Marvel universe, having worked on such titles as Black Bolt and Miles Morales: Spiderman and I look forward to seeing what he brings to the table in this change of landscape. and with Luke Ross as the Artist I think we can look forward to the barbarians adventures being vibrant and colorful.

Final Thoughts

Conan Battle for the Serpent Crown is off to a strong start and I look forward to seeing where they go from here. With a veteran writer at the helm and a strong premise for high adventure, I foresee a story full of colorful characters, both old and new, and scenes and locals that set the stage and make the story come to life. I can't wait for issue 2 to hit shelves.
