He learns a bit about why he's there and who these people are, but the educational portion of his journey is cut short by a staggering attack on Corvus. Daryn has to act fast if he ever wants to get back home again, if that's even possible.
Review
Corvus #1 sets up the series introducing the protagonist Daryn, recounting a story, before admitting that it is probably not the best place to begin.
The scene then shifts to the past where it is revealed that Daryn is a sales associate at a video game store and one of the best players for a popular video game. A typical night at the shop turns into a nightmare when a stranger comes in and tells him to come with her.
The book gets trippy as more about Daryn is revealed, his mom overdosed and his relationship with his father is not much better. The stranger saves him from his coworker who has been turned into a alien monster.
Issue #2 finds Daryn in space and aboard the Corvus, a ship that was once part of an elite fleet created and command ed by the Norse gods meant to protect humanity fro.itself and outside threats.
It is also revealed that two of the crew are the top two score holders and Daryn is the third place person which is why they need his help against the aliens that killed his coworker. As Daryn struggles to understand what is happening to him the ship is attacked and he gets some spur of the moment training. This issue also reveals more about the aliens and how they get inside your mind and force you to relive the worst moments in life.
The art is clean and the very expressive, especially on the close up shots of the characters faces allowing their emotions to show through.
Final Thoughts
The first two issues of this series do a good job of setting up the world and the characters in the story. The series could best be described as a mature version of The Last Starfighter for adults. Its will be interesting to see if the series goes deeper and perhaps deals with the mental trauma caused to Daryn not only being recruited to fight in an intergalactic conflict but also facing the issues in his life such as the loss of his mother and issues with his father.
