Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter #1: Bottoms Up Jerri, You’re On in 3, 2, 1…

From the first page you almost feel for Jerri and her past, which you only get a small cryptic glimpse of, however, it’s a story you need more of, and I for one hope in the future issues we get introduced to it. Which makes the ending of this issue so much more intriguing. The first issue does a great job laying a proper foundation for the next book; leaving questions left to be asked and answers to be revealed; like why is the host of a late-night TV show a monster hunter in real life? And what happened to Jerri’s family?

David succeeds in taking us back to a time when you would stay up late with a bag of Jiffy Pop, watching monster movies, or Svengoolie. His comic debut does a brilliant job of telling a great story that embraces its time period and leaves the reader wanting more of this Dark Horse gem.

Lukas Ketner’s art for this book does exactly what the story commands it to; speak frighteningly through ink. From the cover to the mail-in order form for monster masks (look closely) in the back of the book, Ketner’s art lifts an already strong story that much higher. You really get a feeling of the old monster magazines like Famous Monsters of Filmland, or any cult monster magazine of the era.

I cannot stress enough the excitement I am filled with for this series and what follows. It’s going to be a great ride!
