Recap

The final issue of Count Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter is here, and it’s a rollercoaster ride on a track filled with emotion and foreshadowing with an end that makes you want to get back in line for another ride.

Review

In the final issue, Jerri Bartman’s heartbreaking story comes to an end, and hopefully, she’s able to get some peace back into her chaotic life. Issue four with the combination of plot and art, just might be the best in the series. David Dastmalchian’s razor focus with the pen not only went full closure on Jerri’s monster problem but continued to develop this complex character that we have been rooting for since the first issue.

What Dastmalchian did in revealing a horrible event in Jerri’s past, very few male writers could pull off without sounding crass. This event was definitely a vehicle for her current situation. Jerri finally seeks help and becomes a friend of Bill W, which leads to a plot twist that absolutely no one could have foreseen, in true Count Crowley fashion, we are left with screaming for more.

The cliffhanger that Dastmalchian leaves on is absolutely cruel, but awesome at the same time. The team of Lukas Ketner and Lauren Affe continue their campaign of sending a well written into another realm, and that realm is awesome! Ketner’s focus on character detail in this issue is probably the best in the series, while Lauren Affe‘s colors administer an astounding degree of atmosphere detail that has been some of the best in the past year of comics.

Final Thoughts

The creative team of David Dastmalchian, Lukas Ketner, and Lauren Affe gave us one hell of a story that was rich in plot and characters. Once in a while, you discover a story that not only grabs you and takes you in but sends you on an adventure. That’s what Count  Crowley: Reluctant Midnight Monster Hunter is an adventure that is fun, exhilarating, and scary all at the same time. We can only hope this is not the last time that Dastmalchian, Ketner, and Affe will work together.
