COVER OF DARKNESS #1 (Spoiler-free Review)

I’m a sucker for a good vampire story. So when George Michail contacted me to see if I wanted to do an advance review for Cover of Darkness, I jumped at the opportunity. It’s on Source Point Press, it’s a vampire story, and the art is super creepy, which adds to the ominous of the story. Add all of this together, and you have my attention.

From the opening pages, you’re tossed into the action. We meet a family that has some secrets of their own but sticks together enough to survive. Comprised of vagabonds and shapeshifters, this motley crew has their work cut out for them. Between escaping from the folks they steal from, they will have to make sure they stick together to overcome their latest obstacle. This is one of those situations that you are eager to know more about, especially with Maria, who seems to be the head of the household. Shifting gears, we are introduced to the creepiest depiction of a vampire that the world has ever known. Count Orlock.

As creepy as the Count is, how Michail, Cam, and artist M. J. Hiblen depict Orlock is pure nightmare fuel. I adore how Count Orlock is given the proper treatment in Cover of Darkness. He’s iconic, timeless, and deserves the “royal treatment,” which is precisely what the creative team has done and done masterfully. 

George Michail and Chris Cam have tapped a storytelling vein lush with prose that reels you in and gives you a good scare. M. J. Hiblen absolutely shines on every panel. I love when a book feels complete. Good story, good characters, and sound art make a fantastic comic, and that is exactly what Cover of Darkness is.
