Review
2021 is here and for all of us comic fanatics what an amazing batch of new comics we got to kick off the New Year! Over the holiday break I got asked by a few people what my prediction was for comics in 2021 and among my answers was that I truly believe that Crossover will be arguably the most talked about comic in 2021 .. you heard it here first!
Issue #3 of Crossover is where this fantastic creative team behind this series really displays the immense potential this comic contains!
Looking back now issue 1 & 2 has now laid all the groundwork to allow the book to transition into its next bold act!
We open with a good snippet of back story behind what happened Ellie and her parents back when the event took place, teasing possible scenarios to come.
We also build further on Ryan’s story in a scene with his father where you can only have sympathy for him which is vital for when he teams up with our protagonists!
As we follow Ellie and Otto’s mission to take Ava “The Comic Girl” back to her home this is when we discover the real magic this series will provide to us comic fans, through its use of guest appearances it will grant Donny Cates and his team endless possibilities.
Spoiler warning – as they venture to cross a checkpoint not only do we get the cameo of a Gundam Wing from the anime/comics but its also were we run into our first crossover with Doctor Blaqk and The Paybacks from Dark Horse!
We get amazing and hilarious narrative and notes during this segment first from Ava calling Doctor Blaqk by Doctor Strange only to be corrected by Ellie and then to the introduction of The Paybacks with editor notes self-jesting that “No one remembers them because the series got cancelled.”
This fourth wall banter fits perfectly in this book. A personal favorite of mine when Ryan tells the Paybacks themselves that they got cancelled – genius! And I’m highly anticipating more inevitable scenes like this in future issues! Side note for those who did read Buzzkill & Paybacks like myself… this was an awesome scene!!
We get one more big reveal before this great issue ends as Blaqk and The Paybacks explain to Ellie they were sent to rescue Ava they only answer to the ‘Big Man’ and now this introduction I never saw coming and I will not spoil it either in this issue because go out and pick up these books to experience this for yourself! Never seen that one coming! Incredible!
Final Thoughts
Crossover is going from strength to strength! Such a special book and deserves the attention of every comic fan! I know I'm repeating myself but get on this series now - you owe it to yourself!
