Recap

If there's anything Crush knows, it's that traveling through space is a great time to load up on coffee, catch up on murder podcasts, and definitely not get sucked into a spiral of depression while reflecting on your meet-cute with the ex-girlfriend who just dumped you. On the way to see your father, the one and only Lobo!

Review

So, first of all, that Amanda Conner and Paul Mounts is like the best wrap roll for this issue’s highly gay, satirical, caffeinated, muddy round of Crush in space. With a cover that messy, expressive and nonchalant, no wonder the coffee inside is delicious. And, right from the first page, the whole issue flows greatly from lesbian joke to self-deprecating recapitulation, to the sweet encounter between Crush and Katie, to that tense ending with Lobo taking the stage… and you find yourself at the end of the issue like, that was so fun, and so fast.

With the team staying strong to their premise and delivering, the second issue of this unusual saga keeps the fun vibes, superhero messiness, and a detail to environment, emotion and action everywhere from space stations to children’s parks. Granted, the plot isn’t particularly surprising or innovative in any spot so far, but, by virtue of being one of the few LGBTQ+ teen romances that DC has put in a book (yeah, still in 2021), and of its fun, seemingly careless but complex execution, it couldn’t feel more fresh. And the creative team is on fire for the whole issue, specially in how Bonvillain’s colors fill the page and define the journey, with Maher’s FX effects and those music emojis guiding you through it. Overall, it’s impossible not to enjoy this issue.

Final Thoughts

A nonchalant, ironic, emotionally touchy, overall awesome, dive deep into space, and well, into Crush's crushing! Can't wait for next issue!
