Daredevil #17: Guilty As Sin

If you’re waiting for Daredevil to slow down, you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer. This book as me really riding the fence. On one hand, I want to go on about how Daredevil hasn’t appeared in the book in forever, and that’s why I buy the book. I don’t buy it to see Matt Murdock wander around town feeling sorry for himself, saying how he’s such a bad person, telling anyone who has at least one ear his secret identity. I buy comics to escape the real world, not be reminded of it. I want to see people with superpowers fighting bad guys with superpowers. That’s all I ask. BUT, on the other hand, I also need to tell you how good this book is!!!!  Chip Zdarsky turns in another page-turning, awesomely entertaining story this issue. It is AMAZING how Zdarsky can write an entertaining superhero book with no costumes and like three punches thrown the whole issue. There’s a lot of high drama, a lot of fighting, and a lot of things that will have you on the edge of your seat with the hairs on the back of your neck standing up. However, I’d really, really appreciate it if Daredevil showed up before too long.

Artist Jorge Fornes is really on point with this issue. He’s part of this newer wave of artists that seem to have turned to the past for inspiration. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is overly detailed. There’s such a unique tone that that sort of style gives a book. I’m not saying that Fornes style isn’t realistic, it’s completely realistic, I’m just saying that you’re not going to find a Liefeld-like amount of lines on anyone’s face. There’s an older woman that’s in this issue. She’s perhaps in her mid-to-late 60s. Fornes is able to accurately portray her age with six lines placed strategically on her face. Six. That is the kind of thing that makes Fornes an amazing artist. Needless to say, his work this issue is uncommonly good.
