Daredevil #25
Recap
Daredevil killed a man. On top of that, he stood trial and was convicted of murder and sentenced to serve time in jail. The problem is, is that while he's sitting in jail, Hell's Kitchen is almost literally going to Hell. Something has to be done.
Review
Sigh. It’s really hard to review this title. Not because every issue is pretty awesome, but because author Chip Zdarsky keeps coming up with big and I mean BIG shocking surprises. At some point, you ask yourself “What, is he gonna drop the moon on Daredevil now?” and it’s about that time that the sun comes crashing down. So, please bear with me, between my “no spoilers in reviews” policy and the return of the McRib, my concentration is already walking on a thin line. This is one of those rare issues in Zdarsky’s run that spotlights a character other than DD but that doesn’t mean he’s not a major player here. It’s no secret that Daredevil’s currently in the slammer and bound and determined that he’s going to serve out his sentence to repay his debt to society. But again, this is a comic written by Chip Zdarsky so just when you think there’s no turning back from that situation, two different things pop-up to totally turn that around. There’s not one, but two big shocking surprises in this issue, neither one disappoints and they both fit logically into this story.
The artist for this issue is our old buddy Marco Checchetto! His art is great this issue, he perfectly balances the straight-up superhero style of traditional Marvel art with the grim & gritty look that this book should have just a splash of. I gotta give the assist this issue to colorist Marcio Menyz because without him, this would be a totally different book, and one that, in my opinion, wouldn’t have the impact that this does. Everything’s dark, but not over the top too dark. It’s just enough to set the tone and mood of the book, but the coloring makes nothing hard to see or hard to understand by using just the right amount of “light.”
Final Thoughts
A definite must-have comic! This is part one of a new arc, so do yourself a favor and get in on the ground floor!
