Recap

Review

Part 2 of the King in Black tie-in, “The Black Kitchen” is here!! Last month, I talked about how much I enjoyed this particular tie-in story more than I do other ones because this grew organically and depicted what would really happen if all of a sudden Earth was invaded by a bunch of Venoms. Well, the same thing happens this month. Writer Chip Zdarsky leads the charge on another very well done issue. This one’s got what you want: Venom Daredevil fighting to get out of prison, the internal conflict between Matt and Knull, a Venomized Typhoid Mary, and Elektra-Devil protecting the people of Hell’s Kitchen, There’s also some really great stuff with the Kingpin this issue and you can tell that his big storyline is just beginning and I really can’t wait to see how it plays out. If there’s one thing that bothered me about this issue, it’s the thoughts of Elektra. She seems like she hates being “Daredevil” SO much, it makes me wonder why she took the job in the first place and it really makes me wish she’d either quit outright or hand the mantle off to someone else. But, those are really mild criticisms and don’t take anything anyway from the enjoyment of the issue.

The art chores this month fall again on Mike Hawthorne and Marc Checchetto and they keep up the standard of excellence that they’ve maintained in the past, Every page has such gorgeous detail and just plain-out comic book awesomeness. I’m particularly impressed by their ability to realistically portray the heroes (and villains) in their “Venomized” versions. Great artistic storytelling, plain and simple.

Final Thoughts

Another enjoyable issue from this great creative team. If you're gun-shy about this issue because it's a King in Black tie-in, don't be. You're not going to be lost or confused in the least.
