DAREDEVIL #34
Recap
Daredevil learns of a dangerous new drug distributed throughout the prison by the corrupt warden, Kingpin wants to fire Typhoid Mary, and Elektra faces the clones of her deadliest enemy -- Bullseye! Oh, and did we mention there's another new Daredevil?
Review
I’m going to be real with you: I was never really a huge Daredevil fan. I’ve read some of the comics, I watched the Netflix TV series, but the more lighthearted She-Hulk was always my lawyer of choice. That being said, I think Chip Zdarsky has won me over.
This particular issue of Daredevil reminded me just how powerful social criticism in comics can be. Sure, Daredevil was hopped up on “re-cid”, but even in his drug-induced madness he made some very interesting observations on how our country handles criminal reform. And personally, I love to see Daredevil get angry. The mere mention of Bullseye being on the loose drives Daredevil to escape his imprisonment (which might have been easier than it should have been, but boy was it fun to see).
Some of the other highlights of this issue are the ladies. Elektra and Typhoid Mary are going to have some fun next issue and I can’t wait. I’ve always had an interest in Mary, so seeing her character evolve here is quite a treat.
There was a shift in artists again, with Stefano Landini taking over for Marco Checchetto from last issue. However, Landini does an impressive job with a similar art style that is bolstered by the fantastic colors from Marcio Menyz. The art in general fit perfectly with the Daredevil aesthetic.
The cover artists, Marco Checchetto and Matthew Wilson, deserve heaps of recognition for their stunning cover. As someone doesn’t have a huge history with Daredevil, I’ve always appreciated and admired the gorgeous artwork on virtually every Daredevil cover, and this one blew me away.
Final Thoughts
I now realize there was a Daredevil-shaped hole in my heart. Chip Zdarsky and co. have filled it right up.
