Daredevil #35: Sai Crimes

As we pick up where the last issue left off, Elektra and Typhoid Mary have teamed up to fight the many clones of Bullseye. I was thrilled with the two ladies partnering up to save the day, but unfortunately the pairing was short-lived as Mary quickly runs off long before the battle gets juicy. I can’t lie, this did disappoint me as I thought we would get an issue full of Elektra/Mary quips and interactions.

During the main fight against the main Bullseye, Elektra must use her quick-thinking to save the lives of two innocent civilians who are being held hostage by the assassin. In this scene, the female hostage, dressed as Elektra, ends up saving the day as she body-slams into Bullseye before he can shoot Elektra. I don’t know what it was about this scene, but I was really, really happy that we got to see an ordinary everywoman ultimately save the day. This comic has such strong women and even an unnamed civilian who is basically a glorified extra gets to be a hero. It’s a very empowering message that often isn’t used for female background characters.

Daredevil (or, at least, Matt Murdock) doesn’t appear much which I could see being a complaint by Daredevil fans, but when he does appear, it’s a big moment. Unfortunately, the plot sort of resolves itself pretty quickly and not in a completely satisfying way for me. At least we get some fun guest stars who back Matt up. There’s also a cliffhanger with Mary that I didn’t love simply because I was shaking my damn head at her for abandoning Elektra. But this twist does have some great story potential and I’m very excited to see where it leads.
