Daredevil #36: What’s Right

“Lockdown” has been quite a whirlwind adventure, but it comes to a close in this issue of Daredevil. In many ways, Daredevil #36 felt very removed from the rest of the “Lockdown” arc for me. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as I quite enjoyed this issue.

What I really loved about this particular issue is the growth in Daredevil. He’s a changed man – prison tends to do that. He knows the criminal justice system is flawed and attempts to show compassion to armed goons. It’s as if he ripped a page out of Wonder Woman’s book and I’m not mad about it.

This change spurs Daredevil to confront Kingpin. As I was reading, I thought… oh great, another Daredevil vs. Kingpin fight. But it wasn’t that at all. Matt takes a completely different approach to dealing with Wilson in a way that feels very genuine. I really enjoyed each scene with Matt in this issue. And who doesn’t love a good Daredevil/Elektra sex scene?

As for Kingpin and Typhoid Mary, they do indeed marry in this issue. It’s a quiet moment that I wish packed a little more punch. I’m also not really getting a feel for Mary’s perspective on the whole marriage. She feels very much like “Kingpin’s wife” and not a character in her own right which does her legacy a bit of a disservice. I’m confident that Zdarsky will bring out more Mary in future issues.

I enjoyed the art by Manuel Garcia, though I wish there was a bit more consistency with the art over this story arc. I loved Garcia’s art for the titular hero, but I wasn’t too fond of his Kingpin. There’s a very beautiful shot of Mary in her wedding gown that was a real highlight for me, too.
