Recap

Review

In this issue, author Kyle Higgins introduces a lot of new elements to the book. Connor finally learns about Derek, what he was doing and what happened to him and in addition to that, he gets some pretty distressing news about his condition. And for the cherry on the sundae that is his life, he truly sucks at being Darkhawk this issue. I mean, he really sucks. I’ve really been digging this story that’s being told of Conner outside the Darkhawk suit. It seems to be a very relatable story for a person in high school right now, with some elements elaborated, of course. Thirty years ago I related to Chris Powell and I find it comforting that I can’t relate to Conner, because that proves that Higgins isn’t writing this book for me, but even though I can’t relate to Conner doesn’t mean that I can’t enjoy the comic. As I’ve said before, this is classic Marvel for the current generation. This issue isn’t by any means a feel-good ride, but it’s heavy on developments and action, with a pretty cool ending that I never saw coming. With two issues left in the series, it’s coming down to the wire and I honestly have no idea how this is gonna end up, but it’s sure gonna be fun getting there.

Artist Juanan Ramirez continues his winning streak this issue with another great visual story. He even raises the bar by giving us some new super-villains to go up against Darkhawk, while at the complete opposite of the spectrum, he draws the emotion that the characters in this issue experience with heartbreaking realism, Ramirez put us in the room when Conner gets some bad news, and I swear you’ll feel just as bad as he does. He’s a great artist and storyteller and this issue highlights why.

Final Thoughts

Not the most feel-good issue, but one that you will definitely remember. This issue changes course for Darkhawk and this series. The great ending will have you on the edge of your seat!!
