Darkhawk #5: Praying for Time

It’s terrible when friends fight. It’s even worse when one’s the superhero for a brand-new generation and the other is a supervillain with brand new powers given to him by a drug cartel with a scientist in their ranks. Did I mention that they’re both teenagers? Yeah, whole city blocks destroyed by 2 guys who can’t even vote. But all this leads up to a really good comic and that’s what counts. Isn’t it? Author Kyle Higgins ends this mini-series that introduces the new Darkhawk, and I’ve got to admit, Connor Young has really grown on me and while Chris Powell will always be Darkhawk to me, Connor is a worthy successor to the name, Higgins has taken all that was great about Christ Powell, and mixed it with some new problems and situations and has come up with a truly unique character. It’s been fun watching him grow into the role of hero and while he might quite be there yet, I for one will be excited to read the rest of his journey. 

Hopefully, artist Juanan Ramirez will also come along for the ride. Based on his work on this series, his star is gonna be rising pretty far very quickly with no signs of stopping anytime soon. He’s really great at what makes comic art so enjoyable. He can draw great facial expressions and the way he draws unbelievable things is very believable. There’s a lot of tech in this issue and series that could very easily turn very boring and monotonous and makes it both fun and exciting. Meanwhile, he manages to render teenage emotions with a very realistic look. Another thing that I really like about Ramirez’s art is his cityscapes. Through them, he’s able to set the mood for many of the scenes and even issues in this series, and that’s a very unique talent to have. His art is impeccable, you should definitely check it out!
