DC K.O. ALL FIGHT MONTH: ROUND 3 OF 8 – Wonder Woman Vs. Lobo

Round 3 of Fight Month pits The Amazon versus The Last Czarnian in a match which feels like either of these heavy hitters could walk away with the win. In the issue, writer Joëlle Jones takes an interesting way to introduce the first round, by having some unseen viewer watching television in what is possibly Heaven (a possibly homage to Lobo co-creator Keith Giffen given the humor of the ads that are spoofed).
Wonder Woman and Lobo don’t waste any time or mince words, getting right to the main attraction. Lobo, being the self-promoting Bastich he is, gives a quick introduction about his ability to not easily be killed, for the few readers who may be unfamiliar with the character. Round one is simply these to powerhouse exchanging blows, resulting in Lobo taking down Diana with a massive uppercut, going up one on the Amazon.
Round two, like the Superman/Captain Atom fight, allows the fighters to choose their preferred battle form. Wonder Woman chooses her warrior form, which comes with the accessories of Furies, or Donna, Cassie, Yara Flor, and Kanga ( who literally and figuratively kicks some of Lobo’s dolphin buddies asses). In a unexpected twist Lobo picks his cleaner, better looking New 52 version… which leads Cassie to have the best line of the issue. Wonder Woman emerges victorious after running Lobo down with his own bike.
Round Three begins with some odd contests before the two go back to during it out. Its at this point that it looks like the deciding round could go either way until Lobo’s temper gets the better of him and causes the Almighty to terminate their agreement of immortality from the series Lobo: A Contract on Gawd , in which God grants Lobo immortality for being too evil for Hell and too chaotic for Heaven. Once this contract is terminated, Diana finishes the job and advances to the next round.
This issues also includes an interlude at the end with The World Forager confronting the Darkseid possessed Booster Gold, moving the events outside the contest along outside the main K.O. series.
Jones and the rest of the books creative team pulled out all the stops from action to humor, and mire while showing a firm grasp on what makes both characters tick.
Final Thoughts
DC K.O.: Wonder Woman vs. Lobo #1 provides the best battle round so far, as it contains both action, humor, and an outcome that really could have gone to either contestant and still moved the overall story forward in a logical way.
