DC Superhero Girls: Infinite Frenemies #1: See Ya in the Pit!

Okay listen. I know I’m not the target audience here, being a grown man and all that, but this book was such a pleasant surprise! Kara just wants to be left alone for a weekend of moshing (been there!) but all of her friends keep pulling her in different directions, preventing her from her slamdancing glory. Bearing in mind the actual target demo, this story is a beautiful cautionary tale on the dangers of screen addition and the “connected disconnection” that it brings as the rest of our heroes get sucked into the hottest new app and stop doing all of the things that they care about. Once the app is shut down, they all quickly realize that their addiction was keeping them from those things and they were able to reuinite to save the day. Simple, elegant, and relevant story-telling marketed to the appropriate audience but appreciable by many more.

The art style used by Erich Owen is very much not my cup of tea but it is perfectly appropriate for the book and quite well executed. Each character is distinct and his use of color makes every panel pop off the page. This book probably isn’t one I would have picked up if my regular books were shipping but given the circumstances, it is a purchase I certainly don’t regret!
