Review
DC X AEW finds the heroes of the DCU teaming up with the wrestlers from AEW to recover Wrestling Across The Multiverse (W.A.M.)Intergalactic Championship belt, which has reality-altering properties. Orlando drops readers right into the action and avoids the trope of the DCU and AEW existing in different universes, which allows for getting to the crux of the story… teamups to retrieve the various shards of the belt, while not a very original plot device it still simplifies having to explain things with a lot of exposition.
Thos journey to retrieve these pieces pairs the heroes and wrestlers together and having them visit well-known places and facing various familiar foes. The remainder of the issue is strictly setup and introductions of the AEW cast as they find themselves paired with various heroes. Orlando pulls some deep cuts as places like Limbo Town, the Amazon underworld, and familiar ones such as Dinosaur Island to various bad guy hideouts.
Readers can be sure that Orlando captures the essence of the wrestlers which at times puts them in a slight conflict with the DC heroes. Guiding the action and serving as the characters calling the action are the announcers Excalibur and Booster Gold. Orllando plays Booster as the straight man which seems a bit out of character. It would have been interesting to see a bigger chance taken for the DCU announcer, perhaps Ambush Bug or Plastic Man.
The issue ends with a classic wrestling move of one of the characters turning heel and aligning with Lex Luthor.
Travis Mercer and Dalhouse work well together and provide the energy and spectical associated with wrestling.
It will be interesting to see where the story goes and how Orlando and Mercer bring the finisher to the series.
Final Thoughts
is a solid read for fans of both the DCU and AEW the creative tag-team of Steve Orlando and Travis Mercer flex their creative muscles to bring these two properties together for a story that treats both properties as equals and is reader friendly for those who may not follow AEW Wrestling.
