Recap

"I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was Death, and Hades was following close behind him."-Revelation 6:8

A mysterious techno-virus has been released on Earth, infecting 600 million people and turning them instantly into violent, monstrous engines of destruction. The heroes of the DCU are caught completely unprepared for a pandemic of this magnitude and struggle to save their loved ones first...but what happens to the World's Greatest Heroes if the world ends?

Review

This series jumps right into the action and doesn’t let up. In one issue, we are shown the severity of the threat posed by the techno-virus and that no one is safe.

The pacing of this issue was great; not so fast as to feel jumbled or disorganized but just fast enough to keep the reader slightly uneasy and unprepared for what happens next. The characterization of both Batman and Superman was outstanding; it was interesting seeing a god-like kryptonian and the man who’s prepared for anything being thrust into a situation where they are overwhelmed and unsure on how to fix it.

I felt the threat was also a genius idea and brilliantly written. A corrupted version of the Anti-Life equation that attacks humanity through social media and digital communication and is too intense for even the “almighty” Darkseid to control. In just one issue we see how destructive of a force our heroes are dealing with and are left wondering how they could possibly save humanity this time.

The art was great but didn’t really blow me away. I didn’t like it at first but it did compliment the story well, amplifying the dark, gritty tone in a great way. The use of multiple artists did great for contrasting Earth and Apokolips but gave the book a slightly disjointed feel.

This was an overall great issue that sets up an interesting premise and provides loads of great action and surprising reveals.

Final Thoughts

This is a series with great potential. Filled with shocking moments and endless action, this issue is an exciting and terrifying superhero horror.
