DCeased: Hope at World’s End #1: Photos from the Front

A solid although very quick read, but for a dollar I can’t complain if you, like me, are hungry for more DCeased. This tidbit might help whet your appetite. In typical Tom Taylor fashion we aren’t so much given a story as a long character moment following a narrative. His characterization of the unflappable yet loveable, daring yet delightful Jimmy Olsen is fantastic. I loooove that Jimmy INSTANTLY knows exactly what’s going on helping the story waste zero time getting moving albeit mostly as setup for later issues and recap of the first series in a quickie format.

The line art by Dustin Nguyen is typically excellent (read Descender if you don’t believe me, dude’s a friggin’ beast). Standouts include Jimmy documenting the initial outbreak in a flawless “a good photographer always has his camera” moment and of course Superman’s grand entrance, which might just be my personal bias as a major Supes fan.

The colors by Rex Lokus are vibrant and brutally bloody amid the anti life cataclysm. There’s an almost paint like style employed that works so well in portraying light and shadow especially on faces and rampant blood spatter is gorgeous.

The letter work by Saida Temofonte is tight and seamless with the art particularly a myriad of sound effect panels that really sell the action in the panels. Also worth noting from someone who is learning lettering those jagged zombie growl bubbles are a pain to lay out so extra marks for that.

The cover by Ben Oliver is excellent especially the infected Black Adam in the center although I was a bit disappointed he wasn’t in the book more, but that’s not the covers fault. Seriously though the cover is beautiful. Poster worthy stuff.
