Deadpool #11: You Sly Dog, You Got Me Monologuing!

Settle in for a backstory from Good Night that can really only be explained as convoluted. With Deadpool flopping around boneless, he seemingly has all the time he needs to explain every last detail.

This issue is particularly difficult to review for one key reason, and that is the worst part about it is actually used as a plot point in the story. Good Night’s lengthy explanation about his elaborate backstory makes the issue feel like it drags on in the middle, but with just a few more remarks from the Merc With a Mouth, the two have actually waited around long enough for Deadpool’s bones to literally grow back.

In a situation like this, the payoff at the end of the issue should be worth an extended wait, and luckily Skottie Young seems to know this. He uses the story to provide an excellent opportunity for Deadpool to break the fourth wall and extend the arc by just one more issue. It’s a humorous take on the monologuing villain cliche that works really well for this series in particular.

Aside from a uniquely clever story, the artwork provides some additional spectacle through some truly epic visuals. From Deadpool’s hilarious floppy body to Good Night’s time-travelling training montage, the creative team delivers something great to look at on nearly every page. And while there are plenty (sometimes obvious) nods to Batman from Good Night, the visuals draw stark comparisons even down to his expressions. All of these details help to culminate in a character this is actually funny.

Although we are quickly approaching Skottie Young’s final issue, this series has already become quite memorable with plenty of classic Deadpool antics. This issue is a great example of the untapped potential of the character, and next issue is sure to end with a bang!
