Review

The trials of Deadpool, Monster King continues in Deadpool #3. With Kraven the Hunter looming over the group of monsters and not much help at all from Elsa Bloodstone, Deadpool is forced to consider a human trait that doesn’t cross his rambling mind all too often…

Honor.

That’s right, in the latest whimsical story featuring Deadpool we get to see him placed in a position that explores the impact of honor. Whether it’s a personal commitment or a business opportunity, he’s generally lacked in that department. This creative team has somehow found a way to genuinely dive into this impact without feeling forced, and more importantly, losing the whimsical violence.

The team of artists pulls off another visually stunning issue, but I would like to draw attention to the panel layouts in specific. I’ve mentioned them in previous reviews, but they are uniquely successful in Deadpool #3 as opposed to the issues we’ve seen so far. It doesn’t feel quite as jumbled and helps to create a more fluid reading experience. This also helps the pacing feel more natural as well. While the opening splash featuring a beauty Elsa Bloodstone is amazing, even the small panels amidst a page full of chaos have a certain flair.

While this story isn’t revolutionary or even all that important from a larger Marvel Universe perspective, it’s a good story that is a lot of fun. Kelly Thompson and company have found an enjoyable voice with the character and the monster-side of Marvel feels like a natural fit. While Kraven the Hunter was more of a setup for next issue, he is still an interesting inclusion.

Ultimately, Deadpool #3 is a solid continuation of a new series that is honestly better than it has any right to be. Fans of Deadpool who want a well rounded story without too much baggage will find plenty to love!
