Recap

This is a collection of stories spanning the life of the Merc with a mouth.

The “Immaculate Misconception” is the story of the Deadpool Squad fighting the Ovumatrix for the existence of the world.  This leads to the union of Spider Deadpool and the Ovumatrix which leads to a conception.

“Baby’s First Cable” shows Wade’s one year party interrupted by a wave of Cables from different times trying to kill or save the baby.  In the end, Baby Deadpool shows why he will be the merc with the mouth.

“Best There Is”  Wade is in high school trying to become the prom queen when the the prom is interrupted by a fight with Wolverine and Hydra Agents.  Wade becomes cuffed to the mutant and the two work together to beat the threat.  Wolverine thinks the boy has a gift, he just is not sure but he leaves with a word of advice.  Pick one thing and be the best at that.

In “Lo, There Shall Come a Hero!  Maybe...” we find Wade recovering from the experiments that creates Deadpool.  He is a blob unable to communicate clearly, fortunately we get translations.  Wade tells us his origin and his desire to become a hero like Captain America and others.  Or maybe he will become a mercenary like Taskmaster?

Short Story, Tall Tale tells the story of a Deadpool team up with Agent X against the Stilt-Man.  Stilt-Man mops the floor with the two mercenaries but he does meet his match when Domino and Diamondback arrive on the scene.  The two women take the bounty and leave Wade to heal and Agent X to climb out of a dumpster.

In “No Chill Whatsoever’,  Deadpool brings a mad scientist to his favorite ice cream shop to pick up a cake for his birthday.  Wade picks up his cake and some other ordinances and leaves the scientist in the freezer without a cake.

”Party for One finds Deadpool chained up in a coffin tossed into the sea.  He spends months wandering who put him in this predicament but is rescued eventually by his daughter.  Wad decides to forget who did this to him and decides to live a little instead.

Finally in the “Tao of “Pool, Deadpool treats the reader to a little publishing history and his many changes and team affiliations except for maybe Alpha Flight.  We leave with Wade’s seamster, sowing mor pouches

Review

This issue is a bunch of short stories that culminate in the punchline.  I actually do not really enjoy that type of storytelling as I prefer long form stories that tackle themes and issues. The theme here basically is a trip through the life of Deadpool usually visiting him on his birthday.

After the conception we see Baby Wade at one year old.  We never see his family but we meet a barrage of Cables trying to prevent Deadpool or prevent a mutant uprising.  Either way we see Wade a little too curious and he pulls a pin on a grenade destroying his home.  Despite that the baby lives and is a little crazier now than he was before.

We jump to 16 years and we see the fighting prowess of a young Wade Wilson with his unlikely team up with Wolverine.  This team up is successful but that will not always last. The next birthday we see, Deadpool is born.  This story has a flair of the horror in it as we see what the experiments did to Wade but we also get a glimpse inside the fragile mind of the Merc.  Will he be a hero, mercenary, or maybe both? The Agent-X and Deadpool team up however does not end successfully for our character but the target is brought down anyway.  Wade just does not get the bounty, the ladies do instead.

Next we see Deadpool stealing a cake but leaving a mad scientist in the cooler in its place.

The issue really goes on and on like that.  It is good for a chuckle but there is not a lot to sink my teeth into. Each story has a different art style depending on its story.  My favorite art was in the last story, “The Tao old ‘Pool”.  I like the realistic art and this gives me what I like best.  I can even see the stitches in his costume.  Unfortunately the art is the best part of this story.
