Review
Destro #4 picks up with Destro as a man on the run. Most of the world believes that the man in the metal mask is dead after an assassination attempt seemingly caved in a mountain around him; but Destro does not go down that easily. While he continues his revenge tour, Tomax and Xamot seek to gain control of the M.A.R.S Corporation, including Destro’s pet project with Cobra Commander, the B.A.T. killing machines. As truths are revealed to the forefront, Destro #4 sets up this miniseries for an explosive conclusion that will definitely impact the future of the G.I Joe franchise as it enters its next chapter.
Destro is the kind of series that very clearly identifies its themes and subtext, showcasing the villainous nature of these warlords in a way that makes this world feel so full of life. Destro #4 concludes Destro’s search for answers, which results in what looks like a four way showdown between some of the most dangerous threats in the Energon Universe. One of the best parts about reading this series is knowing that any player in the G.I Joe pantheon could show up at any time. This makes the events unpredictable, leading to fantastic reveals that appeal to fans new and old.
One of the best revelations from Destro #4 is how Destro was so wrong about those who tried to destroy him in the first issue. This kind of paranoia is the makings of those classic G.I Joe villains who saw constant infighting as they sealed to gain total power for themselves. This also shows Destro’s biggest flaw is himself as he creates drama and upheaval around his perceptions of the world around him before actually knowing all the facts. His “strike fast” mentality is going to be his undoing, and laying these threads now creates such an insightful ground for the future.
Andrei Bressan’s art here highlights the best of what is possible in the G.I Joe universe, with disastrous action around every corner. Bressan gives the events of the book a lot of weight. This is displayed in the powerful depictions of destruction as these warlords attack one another and test their weapons. This truly terrifying implication of world power really makes the threat of these characters feel known, creating stakes that are hard to argue with.
Final Thoughts
Destro #4 is a great issue that is full of revelations, implications for the future, and explosive action.
