Review

Detective Comics #1072 gives readers a Bat-family filled story complete with epic action and a great cliffhanger; this issue is certainly one to pick up at your LCS!

The Orghams have been slowly controlling and influencing the city at every possible moment. Their latest display of power is a newly constructed building on top of the old Arkham Asylum site. It’s opening night, and Gotham City is up to its old ways—a sinister and explosive plan is underway as the Bat-family methodically attempts to stop it.

Written by Ram V, this issue was well placed in the overarching story. The previous issues focused on exposition and laying out set pieces, and the payoff is starting.

Batman, Oracle, Nightwing, and Batgirl are the core heroes in this issue, and the pacing showcases how well the team works together on large-scale enemies. It’s a welcome surprise, and their tactics enhance the pacing as they each face different enemies.

While the story takes a back seat, readers will appreciate the action and epic feel as bladed enemies, Azmer-infected monsters, and werewolves descend into battle.

The artwork by the creative team shines as dark tunnels and lit skies shift when different characters are profiled, and the backup story is a spectacle on its own. Ivan Reis, Stefano Raffaele, Danny Miki, Brad Anderson, and Lee Loughridge make a dynamite team, and this issue is gritty and cinematic.

The backup story by Dan Watters further expands on the history of the Orgham family and their connection to Ra’s Al Ghul. It’s a lovely slower tale from the intensity of the main story and does a great job of giving readers more insight into the dueling families.

Final Thoughts

This issue was fast and filled with action. The inclusion of the Batfamily was a great addition and made for an exciting issue.
