Review

Detective Comics #1084 (written by Ram V with art by Javier Fernández and colors by Dave McCaig) is a work of art and a masterclass in writing Batman. As the opening of the third act in Ram V’s Gothic Opera, the story follows Batman as he returns to Gotham and makes plans to let his return be known. The issue opens with Renee Montoya (as The Question) recalling the return of Batman after his apparent death. It’s nice to see a return of Montoya in this issue and she works well as a beginning narrator in this story.

Ram V is doing so well by Batman by producing a perfect characterization of Bruce that feels fresh but also grounded in the bat. The writing is impeccable in this issue, with some lines from Batman and Commissioner Gordon that feel like poetry. Brilliant writing is intertwined with a story progression that is interesting and contains the appropriate level of drama for a Gothic Opera. Action takes a backseat in this story to hone in on the aspects of Bruce’s life that make him the man behind the cowl. It’s a unique approach to writing Batman and feels so effective in revolutionizing a character with years of history. The issue does feel a little clunky at times, with scenes flashing back and forth. However, this clunkiness almost adds to the arc of Batman as his mind is slowly being brought back to his goal in Gotham.

Exceptional characterization and storytelling are paired with interior pages that are literal works of art. Javier Fernández and Dave McCaig created amazing panels with unique layouts that add to the charm of this issue. Every panel in this story is incredible, with details that build a new Gotham in the pages. The lighting in this issue is particularly incredible, with pages that look like the comic is set ablaze just with effective use of color. The cover art by Evan Cagle is also some of the best art I’ve seen in comics in a while. It’s dark and dramatic, which really makes it stand out on shelves. Both the interior and exterior pages reflect the hauntingly ominous aesthetic of Batman. The art and writing work together to tell a beautiful Batman story that feels true to the character.

Final Thoughts

Impeccable writing mixed with stunning art makes this issue incredible. The entire team is creating some of the best Batman content seen in a while. This is the perfect addition to the Gothic Opera storyline.
