Recap

Still in search of Superman to hand the Dial off to, Summer and Miguel arrive at the old Justice League Detroit headquarters and are greeted by the current night manager there, good old Snapper Carr!

Unfortunately, Mister Thunderbolt is hot on their trail, desperate to use to the Dial to reunite his spirit with his body in the Heroverse. He sets the headquarters Justice League bots on the trio, forcing them to use the Dial to fend off the bots. It works well for Snapper and Summer but poor Miguel is trapped in a cycle of Sunday Funny Pages heroes.

Mister Thunderbolt appeals to Miguel's fragile ego, convincing him to Dial S for Sockamagee which does the trick for Mister Thunderbolt! Mister Thunderbolt then takes the Dial and retreats into the Heroverse. As Snapper attempts to reach the Justice League for help, Miguel decides to clean up his own mess and pursues the villain into the Heroverse.

Review

Humphries manages to channel a beautiful sense of 1960s tone and voice into this book without falling into the  trap of feeling overly anachronistic, a difficult feat for even the most seasoned authors. This series continues to fascinate by being both homage yet entirely original in its execution. The nods to Sin City and Strange Adventures in this issue are so well executed they could have been lifted directly from the source material yet still manage to maintain a distinctness of their own.

The chameleonic art from Quinones has been a constant from the first issue. His ability to switch styles at will and beautifully mimic various genres and tones is impressive to say the least. However, moving beyond the art, this issue is the one where this series narratively hits its stride. This issue was, by far, the best in the series thus far.
