Did You Hear About MImi Green #3

Recap
Deep in the bowels of Answers, Mimi embraces her strange new powers as Ashley reveals the grit beneath her anxious exterior. But even together, can they conquer their own demons enough to beat back the Sour Creature and its hungry cystkin? In the outside world, Natalie fights tooth and nail to break into the labyrinth... only to come face-to-face with its terrible architect.
Connor Goldsmith (the Cerebro podcast) and Josh Cornillon (Young Men in Love) plumb the depths of despair in the third chapter of their grisly psychological horror story.
Review
Tyler is dead, and Mimi is on a mad dash to rescue Ashley from an even worse fate. Ashley faces her own trials, but as Naomi and Mimi unwittingly make their way closer to each other, the truth behind Answer finally starts to reveal its gruesome purpose.
The penultimate issue of Mimi Green brings home a lot of the mystery surrounding our characters as it reveals just how Mimi and Ashley ended up at the facility. Beneath the action and horror, there is an intentional focus on these characters and their varied traumas. Ashley’s is framed through the lens of losing her father in 9/11, but Mimi’s cuts a bit deeper.
Connor Goldsmith uses his own life experiences and issues with body dysmorphia to inform Mimi’s own trauma that shifted this world into what it is. What results is a very raw and at times hard to read revelation that hurts if you can either relate to Mimi’s issue, or know Goldsmith’s own backstory. Either way the reveal and subsequent talk with Ashley is an effective one. It’s almost as if Goldsmith is talking to himself.
Josh Cornillion is doing some of his best work on this issue. The off kilter panel layouts and wonky perspective showcase just how unnerving and awful this place is as we travel even deeper. The quiet moments where the characters are forced to sit with information is a unique combination of dark humor and pathos that is fun to read.
Final Thoughts
DYHAMG? #3 is easily the best issue of the series so far as we head into the blood-soaked finale.
