Recap

Will Doctor Mirage escape the clutches of the terrifying Embalmer?

Review

Legends, myths and the inexplicable supernatural forces coalesce into a grim tale surrounding the Death Defying Doctor Mirage, turning the once-psychedelic trip upside down with a horrifying turn of events.

Just when you thought the series found it’s comfort zone with an atmospheric drug-fueled romp through the Deadside, the creative team brings the harsh realities of their tasks down around Shan and Grace. With little guidance from Hwen and a shaken Grace, we see Shan really finding her way back into a confident role and taking control of the situation as best she can. There is a pivotal discussion between the two after just barely escaping the Embalmer that shows the hero Doctor Mirage truly coming back into focus despite facing such a desperate task.

While the shift in tone is certainly felt in the script, the visuals capture something entirely new for the series. Without this harmony, the issue just wouldn’t feel right. It doesn’t feel out of place or forced, instead, it builds on the established dynamics and takes readers to an even darker place than before. This feeling of spiraling out of control and deeper into the Deadside makes for a thrilling experience.

There has been a growing tension in the issues so far, but Doctor Mirage #4 seems intent on turning that tension into outright fear. While the last cliffhanger was shocking, what we find in the last page of issue #4 will most likely follow you to your nightmares. It sets up a final issue that is sure to be a haunting experience. While the mystery surrounding Hwen hasn’t received that much attention, the story feels well positioned to end on a high note.

As we go into the final issue, I can’t help but say I already want more stories about Grace and her rather complicated life. As a character, Grace has a lot of depth and it seems like we’ve only scratched the surface of that potential. I’m looking forward to seeing more of her in the future.

With Doctor Mirage being put to the test so harshly, the final issue is sure to be an explosive and emotional issue capping off a truly remarkable story. This creative team certainly deserves a second volume because this is proof that they have a lot to offer the character.

Final Thoughts

The penultimate issue of Doctor Mirage is a terrifying twist on the psychedelic trip you thought you knew, bringing real scares and danger to a truly thrilling story.
