Recap

Doctor Strange is walking the wasteland that was once the Earth, the last man alive on the run from the forces of the dread Dormammu. He must make it to the site of a gigantic impact in order to utilize one last magical artifact to bounce himself back in time to warn the Earth of whats coming! Can he make it before Dormammu tracks him down?

Review

Wow! This issue was about ten times better than I expected and left me wanting so much more, I would read an entire miniseries of this post apocalyptic magic infested world. Old Man Stephen anyone? I know post apocalyptic is done to death but this is more along the lines of a trip to hell than a trip to thunderdome. Well done Gerry Duggan, way to give me hope for your Conan series!

The art by Greg Smallwood is insane! The visuals are vaguely reminiscent of the gray landscape of The Road (great movie) if it were teeming with terrifying demons straight out of a nightmare. Hilariously Dormammu looks relatively tame in comparison to his children, which are mishmashes of human and animal parts. Of course it wouldn’t be a Doctor Strange book without a trip through Ditko’s magic backways, which are recreated beautifully.

This event as a whole has been a breath of fresh air, albeit a little annoying to navigate as a series of one shots, but I digress. Shockingly good work, amazing that four different writers have made such a cohesive vision, but Al Ewing, Chip Zdarsky, Jason Latour and Gerry Dugan have done something special here. Don’t forget to check out our other Best Defense reviews of Immortal Hulk and Namor, on shelves now! Keep your eyes peeled for Matt Meyer’s review of Silver Surfer coming soon!

Still no idea what the stabby ghost dude is about.

Final Thoughts

It's not too late to pick up this whole series it's so amazingly good!
