Review

In my years and years of reading comics, this was definitely one of them. I think maybe after writing this script, author Christopher Cantwell may have had his keys taken away so he couldn’t drive home from the party. On one hand, this script was so unbelievable it wasn’t funny. On the other hand, this script was so unbelievable that it was really funny. What sounds like the start of a joke, Doctor Doom and Kang are on a steam train headed to Latveria, is the honest-to-God plot of this book. It quickly becomes a sequence of sitcom-like random scenes and dialogue without that much of substance to hold them together. However, some of those random scenes and conversations are literally laugh out loud funny. No real jaw-dropping shocks or surprises to speak of this issue, but I have a feeling we’re going to see some pretty intense stuff next issue. The only thing that’s kind of bothering me is the tone that that issue might take. But, that’s a subject for another day.

Back again, and still on top of his game is artist Salvador Larroca. In this weird, unsettling environment, Larroca is the rope that connects you back home. His art is comforting, functional, gorgeous and so many other things. He draws a hobo from the old west right alongside the evilest man the world has ever known and a time-traveling conqueror and he draws the hobo so that he’s intimidated, but can hold the same space as the others, and that’s a pretty amazing artistic achievement.

Final Thoughts

A solid comic, if it was an issue of What The...?. but for the "serious" course that the book is on, it's not that great.
