Dr. Strange Surgeon Supreme #1
Dr. Strange is back … doing surgery that is. Issue one takes on a journey visiting his day as; Dr. Strange the Surgeon and Dr. Strange the superhero. Will life become too much? How can he save lives in surgery and save the world?
As someone who is generally on the fence about Dr. Strange, I was unsure if I was going to like series. I experienced internal conflict. What made him the Dr. Strange that we all have come to know, now has the one asset that made him Dr. Strange in the first place: His hands.
I was surprised at how much I did like the issue. I believe I can see the direction the writers may take us. He knows the use of his hands comes with a price. Until then he will focus on saving lives as a surgeon. You can tell there will be conflict with his professional life and his superhero life. We as humans often have the struggle to keep a work-life balance, seeing someone add superhero in the mix, is somewhat relatable.
If you are new to Dr. Strange this is an awesome jumping on point. It goes over his history (a bit), you won’t be lost.
The writing is done well in this issue. I am always hesitant to call a book a number one when there are constant runs and history of the character, but it did have a fresh new smell to the Character. I am looking forward to see what becomes of this run.
The art can be hit and miss. The faces are different than what I like and it can sometimes seem inconsistent. However, I believe they were showing a difference between Dr. Strange Superhero and Dr. Strange Surgeon. When I say hit and miss, I am not saying that in a negative way, or in a way that I did not like it, just not the style I prefer to see in my books. With that being said; outside of the faces in the hospital, the art was high quality. Especially the battle panels and the final splash page.
I believe this is a great starting point for new readers to jump on the Dr. Strange series. The struggle with work-life/superhero balance is real. This series shows a ton of promise with a new look into Dr. Strange.
