Recap

So, We ended last with three new additional spiders. Each is fearless and unique in their way. Starting with Pavitr Prabhakar, our Indian Spider who travels the different universes monologuing and slaying bad guys!

Then the ever so lovely Felicia Hardy's, The Night- Spider Beautiful cat burglar cursed with the responsibility of Spider powers. But do the abilities change you or amplify you? A question The Night-Spider is struggling to answer.

And last but certainly not least, probably my favorite of the group, Sakura Spider! From her cute outfit to her very young, naive demeanor, you can't help but love her and the other additions—all building up to a massive battle. With one of the largest scale reinforcements, I have seen in a comic series.

Review

Now, this array of Spiders is getting crazy! Going down the list from Noir Spider to the newly introduced SPIDER-HAM, there is no limit to Jordan Blum’s imagination. Edge of the Spiderverse #4 introduces four new heroes, Spider-Ham, Sun-Spider, Spider-Mobile, and Spinstress. Each with a fascinating take on a spider in their universe. Madam Webb certainly has the potential to defeat the enemy in the mega battle to come. However, in this book alone, my favorite Spider would have to be Princess Petra, AKA SPINSTRESS!

My reasons are pretty simple. I love the Disney aesthetic we are going for here, and her dress is made out of sparkly webbing!! As all princesses should, she has a sidekick spider named Webster. Yes, it’s cheesy that this story has her singing and her mother looking like the Evil Queen and Maleficent. However, this is a kick-ass comic. She can be stunningly gorgeous and willing to give up love for the greater good. That is inspiring, as is her other Spider- a companion I enjoy, Sun-Spider.

Charlotte “Charlie” Webber is a young high school girl with E.D.S (Ehlers Danlos Syndrome) and can still be an active spider that saves the day. Besides being bitten by a radioactive spider, Charlie is your typical teenager. Wanting to dance at the prom with Astor, the girl she’s been crushing on for a while. Ordinary girl, right? Except for Charlie rocks out as the Sun-Spider. Sun-Spider changes it up with her orange and black outfit and utilizes her crutches to fight crime. How incredible is that?!

There are two more heroes in this book that bring comedic relief. I won’t spoil who they are, though. This book was light-hearted and delightful to read. This creative team has done a fantastic job bringing in this wide variety of spiders. And look out because they are ramping up the comic and bringing it to a new level. I appreciate that each Spider’s story has different art and writing styles.

First, the writing team did well with the flow of the stories, Tee Franklin, Dan Slott, David Hein, and Jordan Blum. Then, the artists Ty Templeton, Luciano Vecchio, and Nathan Stockman make everything up to jump off the page. Bravo to the entire team.

I look forward to seeing who else joins Madam Webbs’ fight against this great evil. It will be a great fight with a team as talented and unique as this.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I have enjoyed the entirety of this series, and book #4 was even more fun with how light-hearted, endearing, and genuinely inspirational each new Spider is. I await the next book with anticipation and can only say keep up the fantastic work, Edge of Spider-Verse team!
