Recap

EDDIE'S FATHER STEPS INTO THE SPOTLIGHT! The Menagerie has met its match! No, not Eddie. Come on. It's Eddie's father, George! He's got the jump on the Menagerie's best tracker, Drahthaar, who has found his way to Pluto. It's a match of wits and weapons, but George has always said he won't protect Eddie, so what's his move here? And what made George into the hard-ass he is today? Well, you're getting a flashbaaack!

Review

The Menagerie has sent one of its top men to find Eddie, but instead has come across his father. As a tense stand off occurs in the Stallion home, Eddie has his own problems to deal with when a bear wanders into town.

This issue is one that works with two opposing tones that can feel a bit jarring this far into the series, but that jarring feeling all depends on subsequent issues deal with this fallout. While the second half of this issue is more of the same crass humor and violence we have come to expect, the first section is where the real meat of this issue resides. It centers on George’s encounter with a man named Drahthaar, a skilled tracker working for the Menagerie. It’s here we get more insight into George, as well as his surprising link to the Menagerie as an organization. What happens next should have serious consequences for the story moving forward.

Kyle Starks does a good job of writing these two extremes of tone in this issue. While Eddie’s bad attitude is starting to grate at this point, his fight with the Bear is comically short. Richard Smiley also finally makes his presence known, but he doesn’t make much of an impression on Eddie.

Steve Pugh’s art doesn’t do much more than it already has, which was already great, however the end of George and Drahthaar is very dynamic with Chris O’Halloran’s colors toning down the normal brightness for a more moody and somber palette.

Final Thoughts

End of Life #4 feels like it could be a turning point in the series with major moments punctuated by both humor and serious intent. We see how Eddie will handle the aftermath next time.
