Review
Each year since its inception, Skybound Entertainment has released an Energon Universe special issue for Free Comic Book Day, sometimes setting up major events to come and other times delivering a self-contained, fun story. These free issues are later reprinted as standalone specials, often accompanied by striking variant covers that highlight key elements from the stories within. A consistent thread throughout these releases has been the teasing of major developments in the Energon Universe, frequently aligning with its ongoing expansion. For 2026, that focus primarily centers on M.A.S.K., the newest ongoing series spinning out of Transformers and G.I. Joe.
The first and longest story serves as a primer for M.A.S.K., following Matt Trakker and Miles Mayhem as they prepare their respective factions for a globe-trotting espionage conflict that feels perfectly suited to this shared universe. The narrative primarily introduces the key players, offering a “who’s who” of the series while hinting at the central conflict to come. It effectively bridges into the opening of M.A.S.K. #1, making it essential reading for fans of the original cartoon and for those invested in Skybound’s growing Energon Universe.
The second story, though brief and entirely dialogue-free, offers a quiet glimpse into the world of the Transformers. It introduces a mysterious new character, a skilled swordswoman who proves more than capable of surviving against the planet’s natural dangers. While her identity remains unknown, the story ends on a surprising note with the apparent fate of a fan-favorite Autobot. Though light on narrative depth, the segment stands out thanks to Jason Howard’s striking artwork and the intrigue surrounding this new addition to the universe.
The third story, arguably the most compelling, acts as a thematic bookend to the ongoing Quintesson War arc from Void Rivals, despite that storyline not yet having officially concluded. Interestingly, it appears to reveal the fate of certain characters, perhaps prematurely. The inclusion of Cobra-La agents, led by Pythona, is given greater context here, suggesting their presence is part of a larger, more deliberate plan. Most notably, the story hints at a future where characters from Void Rivals make their way to Earth, raising the exciting possibility of greater crossover potential across the Energon Universe. Given the groundwork laid in recent G.I. Joe issues, further interconnectivity between these titles now feels not only plausible, but inevitable.
The final story takes a darker, more somber turn, presenting a flashback that reveals how and why Zartan assumes control of Hawk’s life within the pages of G.I. Joe. With a tone reminiscent of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the story captures the unsettling nature of Zartan’s deception as he seamlessly replaces Hawk without detection. While it does little to advance the present-day plot, it enriches the overarching narrative by adding meaningful context and psychological weight to the situation. Of all the segments, this one arguably contributes the most to its respective series, even if it remains nonessential for readers focused solely on the main storyline.
Overall, this Energon Universe special succeeds in doing exactly what these annual releases aim to accomplish. It teases future developments, expands ongoing narratives, and provides a variety of tones and storytelling styles within a single issue. Whether through major setup, quiet character work, or deeper narrative context, each story offers something of value and reinforces the sense that this shared universe is steadily building toward something much larger. For longtime fans and newcomers alike, this special serves as both an accessible entry point and an exciting glimpse of what lies ahead.
