Firefly: Brand New 'Verse #2
Recap
It's been 20 years since the events of Firefly, but Serenity can't seem to keep out of trouble -- which means Zoe and her daughter Emma are in for a world of hurt! With the Blue Sun on their tail, they turn to the only people they can trust -- Kaylee and Simon. But what happened to Mal... and what does it mean for the new crew of Serenity?
Review
This issue has more of a sci fi flair than other issues in the Firefly franchise I have read. We see more of the insides of star ships than the natural environments of planets and that I find is a good change of pace. The art has a more realistic flair when it presents humans and I do like the details given to costumes and hair styles. Each character is unique and diverse, the reader cannot confuse characters and it opens the world we are reading about to diversity and differences.
I want to focus on the the scene in the dining room of Serenity. Looking at the art the room actually looks like it could be in a house and not on a ship. The table itself is shown as wooden and that creates a homey environment for this ship. It makes sense that these characters like this ship when you compare it to the bridge of the Blue Sun ship which looks like a starship bridge.
I like where this story is heading. The crew of the Serenity is facing a moral dilemma they did not sign up for as Salo puts it. I do wonder why Zoe is so adamant that the mystery girl is property that should be sold. Does she know something that she is not letting her crew know?
As with the crew, they show real human relationships. The is evident in the way Lu reacts to Emma almost killing him while he was outside Serenity attempting to repair the drive. Lu is angry with her and she is clueless as to why. I think Emma is going to be the focus of this story and I do want to see her grow as a person and a spacer.
This is the first we see the reassembly of the old crew. We see that Simon and Kaylee are married with two kids and it is fun to see Emma’s reactions to them. She really grew up with them and she sees them as family even calling Kaylee her aunt. It is great to see this affection among different people.
Final Thoughts
The mystery ramps up for the crew and they need to call on some past friends to help solve it. I enjoy this issue and it is a worthy part of the Firefly universe.
