Recap

The Serenity soars once again, 20 years after the events of Firefly, and Zoe must complete the most important mission of her life: keeping her daughter Emma safe.
But Emma doesn't see herself as needing protection and aims to misbehave in ways that are mighty familiar... Which wouldn't be such a problem if the Blue Sun Corporation hadn't caught up to Serenity.

Review

I absolutely love the visual aesthetic of this series.  It is a science fiction story but it looks like the Serenity crew are not on a distant planet but really on Earth in a time gone by.  At the same time, there are scenes that look and feel futuristic, especially the scenes involving the Blue Sun people.  This dichotomy is also expressed in the story.

Just as with the art, the story is starting to reveal that mystery woman the crew found is from the past herself.  Her past can be traced to old Earth.  What does old Earth have to do with this story?  Only time will tell.

Despite the mystery and science fiction elements, writer Josh Lee Gordon is able to bring humanity and family to this story.  I thoroughly enjoyed the family dinner the crew has with Kaylee and Simon.  It gives a homey feel and a good respite to the mystery everyone is trying to solve.  In addition I like the exploration of Emma and Zoe’s relationship.  Emma is young and she is unable to see that Zoe is trying to help her grow. Instead, Emma feels that Zoe is holding her back and not allowing her to take what she feels is hers to take, command of Serenity. In this journey, Gordon has filled her life with a stunning supporting cast, all seem to be there to help show Emma how she needs to grow but they are also there to provide her support. This truly is Emma Washburn’s story and I am happy to be along for the ride and a witness to her character growth.

Final Thoughts

This is a human story set in outer space. If you're an old fan of Firefly or a newcomer, this is the book for you!
