Recap

Blue Sun tracks the crew of Serenity in hopes of getting their “property” back.  This leads to a car chase and Em whisks the time displaced woman off of the planet leaving her mother behind to face the wrath of Blue Sun.

Review

The ending of this issue was surprising for me.  I expected to see Zoe and the others catch up to Em and escape the planet together.  Instead Zoe and the others are left behind to be captured by Blue Sun, while Lu and Em escape with the mystery woman.  I really am questioning Em’s decision here and her character. I saw her mother in previous stories cross rivers and level mountains to help her crew and Mal when they needed it. No we see Em doing the exact opposite, she abandons her mother and friends and only escapes with the ship’s engineer.

The car chase sequence was exciting. I loved the “pink Cadillac” that Doc, Kaylee and the others escaped in. It even runs on four hovercraft discs that looks like the wheels of the car. The use of the giant robotic grasshoppers in this sequence is also great. It helps create high stakes for this chase.  I am not so sure I liked the kids being placed in this danger and seeing them tied up by Blue Sun is also concerning for me.

Again the dichotomy of the crew of Serenity’s surroundings and the Blue Sun’s crew surroundings. Blue Sun looks like a Star Trek starship while Serenity has the beat up feel of Star Wars. This creates a David and Goliath type of conflict.  How can this backward crew of smugglers beat the established power of the Verse?

The art continues to be good. The characters each look unique and I love the western look of Zoe and her crew. They look like cowboys in a futuristic world and I find that to be feast for my eyes. The art and colors makes this story unique and fun to read.

Final Thoughts

This story continues to be an action packed space soap opera with heart.  I have enjoyed every issue and the issues illustrated are really thought provoking.
