What You Need to Know:
This is a new series from Aftershock, written by Sean Lewis (The Few) and illustrated by Steve Uy. (Uncanny Avengers)
“Welcome to the World of Betrothed! Kieron and Tamara are both seniors at the same high school. They’ve never paid much attention to each other, even though they are the only kids at school who are orphans. On the eve of their eighteenth birthdays, they discover a lifelong secret: in a dimension far away, they are each the leader of an army that is at war with one another…and what’s more, when they turn eighteen, they’re to be Betrothed or Fight to the Death!”
-AfterShock PR
What You’ll Find Out:
We open on a boy named Kieron getting beat on by a girl named Tamara. She knocks out one of his teeth and threatens to do worse than that! A friend pulls her away before she can do anything rash.
After they’re separated her friend asks what came over her, as an A student and charity worker she is hardly predisposed to violence. Before she gets a chance to answer she sees Kieron again, this time the outcome is much different!
Elsewhere, a truce is being struck, whether they fight to the death or fall in love, in 9 days the Priams and their magic, or the Nuam and their technology, will gain control of the Quartz deposits on Priam! The teenagers are the leaders of the factions, they just have to turn 18 and decide! (All of this will make a lot more sense if you read the issue)
Make sure to keep an eye out at your local comic book stores for Betrothed #1 from AfterShock Comics on March 14th! Or pick it up digitally on Comixology!
What Just Happened?
Pretty interesting concept for a series, the idea of a war hinging on the whims of a pair of capricious teenagers is a bit worrisome, to say the least. I always am a sucker for alternate universe stories, fans of series such as Image’s Elsewhere will definitely enjoy this one, the visuals, although less sweeping, are equally excellent. Steve Uy is definitely gifted in the detail department.
I do wish we had seen more of the alternate world of Priam, it seems like a really interesting place, and if I have one complaint it’s that I wish I could find out more, which we will in due time.
Rating: 8/10
Final Thought:
Cool start to what promises to be an interesting series, I’ll definitely be picking this up come March 14th, it’ll be one to watch I’m sure. If the future covers are any indication this is going to go some crazy places!
