Review

The end, for now.

This is a strong issue, Boom Studios, and Locatelli-Kournwsky, leaving the readers both with a satisfying conclusion, as well as setting up the story for more issues in the future. I, for one, definitely cannot wait to see what he comes up with next.

The strongest part of this issue were the first thirteen pages. Without using words, or a lot of colours, in this otherwise, brightly coloured comics, we learn about Naoko’s journey, and the whole sequence is readily powerful. Locatelli-Kournwsky and Eros De Santiago created something truly magical here, and it is no small feat to communicate so much without having used any words or colours to guide their narrative. This is honestly a beautiful, strong partnership, and I can see some truly wonderful things coming out of it.

The actions sequences are beautifully and cleverly crafted, so even during fights, scenes of violence, and chaos, it is performed like a well-choreographed dance, where the artist and the colourists are in full control of their scenes and know exactly how to make these sequences fit in with the overall tone and theme of the comic.

Master Himiko continues to be brilliant, and I adore her with all my life and. I will cry if anything happens to her in the future. She has this wholesome vibe, where you just know that she is someone who knows what her students need most at any given time, and even during scenes of loss or moments where they are not winning, she continues to support and guide her students in a way where they do not feel defeated. Truly an Icon. And if she can make me grow to like Sara more and more, then more power to her!

With some truly striking visuals towards the end of the comic, with the promises of a great big baddie in the future, Flavor Girls has left me both content with the conclusion and made me cross my fingers, hoping to see more!

Final Thoughts

Overall, this was a good first act from Flavor Girls. It manages to stand on its own two feet, despite the comparisons drawn to other ‘magic girls’ shows and comics, and creates something that I believe people will want to go back to. The art is beautiful, the storytelling strong, and the characters are easy to love. I will be on the lookout for more, and you should too!
