Frankenstein: New World #2

As Lilja and Frankenstein explore the vibrant world around them, they rescue someone who introduces them to the new race of man. But unbeknownst to them, evil lurks within the shadows, tracking our heroes while sowing seeds of death and destruction.
Review
The Hellboy Universe has a special place in my heart. Mike Mignola created something really wonderful and impressive. I think a big part of why it works so well is because so many talented writers, artists, and letterers have worked on these books, but under the supervision of Mignola. Because this universe utilizes the best of the best, it feels so fleshed out due to years of tight world-building. Frankenstein: New World is completely new ground and is quite literally world-rebuilding. If issue #1 didn’t capture your attention, there’s a good chance that issue #2 will. I’m not sure how much each writer contributes, but it really feels Mignola, Christopher Golden, and Thomas Sniegoski put a lot of care and attention to detail into this issue. Frankenstein and Lilja learn how this new world came to be, and it feels true and appropriate to this universe.
I really like the interactions between Frankenstein and Lilja. Lilja is filled with awe and innocence while Frankenstein is tragic and Ronin-like. They are both from different worlds, so we are seeing this new one through both of them. The majority of this issue takes place in a settlement of frog-people after Frankenstein and Lilja save one from being eaten by some type of creature. Frankenstein fighting his way through them with the Hyperborean sword is the coolest thing I’ve seen this week. On that note, this whole issue is gorgeous. I’m not sure if Clem Robins or Peter Bergting provided the onomatopoeia effects, but they work so well with the art and especially Michelle Madsen’s superb colors. This is such a vibrant and exciting world filled with so many interesting creatures and plant life and the coloring of this issue reflects that. Bergting and Madsen really show readers a new world.
Final Thoughts
FRANKENSTEIN: NEW WORLD #2 is well-written with stunning visuals and gives #Hellboy fans a look at the world they knew reborn through #Frankenstein’s eyes.
